Most places, from restaurants and bars to market stalls and shops, take most major debit and credit cards. It’s best not to carry much cash.

It’s customary to tip at least 10% in restaurants and bars. If you’re driving, it’s also the done thing to tip the car guards who help you find parking or watch over your car.

Literally the whole year round. South Africa gets an average of 8.5 hour of sunshine per day (compared with 3.8 in London, 6.4 in Rome and 6.9 in New York). Even in winter, the bright, warm Jo’burg sun makes outdoors a very pleasant place to be. (If you’re coming from the northern hemisphere, remember our seasons are the other way around!)

While South Africa is generally safe for tourists, please be aware that the crime rate is much higher in some areas than others. Always ask before going to a new area. Avoid walking alone at night, be discreet with valuables, and be aware of credit card skimming at ATMs.
